I've always been told (and read) that when doing pistols, your heel needs to be planted and your knee aligned with your foot. Otherwise it could damage your knee.

My question..

What is the correct technique on railings and other thin objects that require balance?

I've seen video of stephen vigroux doing them on the ball of his foot. I can't keep my heel planted on a rail and do pistols, I just lose balance. When I try it just on the balls of my feet it becomes much easier, but then all I've been told is wrong.

Can anyone clarify this for me?
